I work with my patients this way:
We start, of course, by talking with each other. We have conversations. The scope, depth and intensity of our conversation, however, are likely to feel different than many conversations you usually have in your daily life.
As a medical doctor, I often feel pulled to offer tools for symptom relief and alleviate unnecessary suffering. As a Jungian analyst, I try to meet you where you are and engage with you in a series of conversations exploring your feelings, thoughts, sensations, and dreams in hopes to help further your individuation process – to grow, love, work, and live as authentically as you wish.
This entails, of course, discussion of your present circumstances and any future goals that led to your seeking professional help, but it usually also involves exploration of your personal, familial, cultural, and/or spiritual past, as well as how these powerful undercurrents might be occurring in how we relate to each other in the consulting room. In the process, I can be downright pragmatic, suggest medication when indicated, or even give direct advice when called to help with a vexing situation in your life. All the while, however, I attend to the therapeutic field so that we can explore together the forces at play in the interior, which tug, push, or trap and thereby affect your relationships, work, and general wellbeing.
I have a special interest in the experiences of immigration in adults who immigrated as children or who are children/grandchildren of immigrants, as well as the experiences of multiracial or multicultural adults.
I received my undergraduate degree from University of California San Diego, Revelle College, where I studied biology, and spent a year working full time in an immunology laboratory there, trying to decide whether to pursue a doctorate in biomedical research or get a medical education. As enticing as the stories of research and discovery are, I decided that I was drawn more to the work of direct patient care than the day to day tasks of scientific research. I studied Medicine at Tulane University School of Medicine and completed Residency in Psychiatry at University of California San Francisco in the 1990s. I opened my private practice in 1998. In 2012, I completed advanced training and received Certification in Jungian Analysis at the C. G. Jung Institute of San Francisco, where I am currently an analyst member and have been involved in teaching and training.
In addition to my private practice, I am a Clinical Assistant Professor at Stanford University School of Medicine, Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences, where I treat students at Stanford University student health services and supervise residents. I am a member of the Northern California Psychiatric Society, American Psychiatric Association, and International Association for Analytical Psychology. I am Board Certified in Psychiatry with the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology.
